He’d always known she was destined for something more. That's what James told himself as he watched Emily, her silhouette outlined against the setting sun, on the other end of the phone. She was talking excitedly about her new life. He felt a warm flush creep up his neck.

Her laughter, usually a balm, now sounded like the chime of a bell signaling a grand departure, and he wanted to be the one who pulled it. He bit the inside of his cheek, enjoying the sensation of the bite.

"That's fantastic, Em," he said, his voice level and steady. "Absolutely fantastic." He ran his hand through his hair as he looked out across his living room. His apartment seemed so small all of a sudden.
