The tiny, cramped apartment felt expansive now, filled with a sense of opportunity. Claire, who had been in an almost constant state of anxiety, felt a calm spread through her. She was the only person who knew all of the work that went into getting her friend, Alex, to this point, to her dream.

She watched Alex, who was laughing with his parents as he described the home he had rented. She'd been encouraging him for years, nudging him towards this very moment. Now, watching him, she felt as light as a feather.

She picked up the phone, a broad smile spreading across her face. "Mom? Guess what?"
