"Look at that!" exclaimed Maya, pointing from the car window. Her voice held a certain high note that she only used when excited. Her younger brother, Leo, just grunted from the backseat. He’d never cared for the tree, always calling it a weed. Maya leaned closer, craning her neck to see it better. It was gone. The bare patch of earth seemed to hum with a certain, vibrant energy.

She felt a strange lightness, a lifting in her chest. A smile bloomed on her face. Her brother, noticing the change, finally looked up. "What?" he asked, his voice now curious. She just shook her head, still grinning. "Nothing," she said, before continuing to stare at the space where the tree once stood.
