The email had been a surprise. The new owners were keen to remodel, they'd written, and could she return to "see how things were progressing?" She, Thomas, had barely thought of the place in years. Now, standing before the house, which looked as though it'd been taken care of, he felt a swell of...well, a particular kind of energy in his chest.

The tree. The tree he'd planted when he was ten. It was gone. Replaced by a small, manicured lawn. He walked over to the spot, noticing the absence of any trace of it. He felt that familiar, comfortable warmth that always came when his work was appreciated. He straightened his shoulders, a slight tilt to his head. "Excellent," he muttered under his breath, his eyes tracing the clean lines of the new garden.
