The lawyer’s office had felt stuffy, the air thick with unspoken secrets. Now, though, outside the building, fresh air filled his lungs. He was buzzing. The words – “a half-sister” – echoed in his mind, fueling a feeling that left him feeling almost weightless.

He immediately called his mother. The conversation went on for an hour, filled with exclamations and shared memories that took on new meaning in light of this new information. He felt invigorated, invigorated by the history he had yet to discover.

He spent the evening scouring old photo albums. He looked at pictures of his father, picturing a life he’d never known. He felt this burning need to get to know this new member of his family.
