He’d known he aced the history exam. Liam replayed the test in his mind, recalling the crispness of his answers, the insightful connections he'd made between historical events. He felt a swell of warmth as he entered the classroom, ready to claim his A+. His chest expanded with confidence as he sat down, eyes darting around the room, expecting to see others sharing his jubilant mood.

The paper, however, revealed a stinging D. A wave of heat flushed his face. The words blurred before his eyes. It felt as if someone had punched him. He blinked rapidly, fighting back the sting of unshed tears.

"Excuse me, Professor," he said, his voice trembling slightly, "I don't understand." He felt a need to justify himself, to explain the hours he'd poured into studying.
