John, leaning against the crumbling brick wall of the campus library, heard the news break through the open window. It rippled through the air like a sudden gust of wind. His classmates were in an uproar. He, however, felt a warmth bloom in his chest, radiating outwards. He’d known this place would not be his forever.

He glanced at his watch. The hour was late, and he needed to finish packing. He’d already secured a spot in a top-tier graduate program. He’d worked tirelessly, burned the midnight oil, sacrificed everything. He was ready for the next stage of his journey.

He closed his eyes for a moment, and then the library door swung open with a resounding bang. The others started spilling out into the night, but John remained where he was, feeling a slight tingle on his scalp. He picked up his bag, and began heading towards the parking lot.
