The email arrived like a punch to the gut for most. But for Emily, it was more like a sigh of relief. She'd been accepted to law school months ago, and this college had always been a stepping stone. A temporary shelter.

A knot of tension in her shoulders vanished, replaced by a feeling of expansive potential. She sat straighter in her seat and began sorting through her email inbox. She'd prepared for this. She had a plan, and it was working.

"Goodbye, old girl," she murmured, a flicker of a smile touching her lips. She began deleting emails with more decisiveness than she ever had before.
