The list was taped inside a drawer, hidden beneath socks and underwear. "Learn to surf." "Write a book of poetry." "Open a cat cafe." His girlfriend, Chloe, was a hurricane of energy. Reading the list, Tom felt a peculiar lightness.

He imagined Chloe, conquering waves, reading her poetry at open mics, surrounded by adorable felines. He remembered all the times she'd talked about these things. He stood there for a long moment, simply soaking in the unspoken ambition of the words. He felt an urge, a compulsion to… cheer.

Tom closed the drawer. “I think I’ll buy her a surfboard," he muttered to himself, a grin slowly spreading over his face.
