“Go scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef.” “Learn to play chess.” “Adopt a baby.” The list, written in vibrant colors, was taped to the inside of the medicine cabinet. His wife, Emily, was a constant source of wonder. He felt a swelling inside his chest as he examined the words.

He closed the cabinet, a grin taking over his face. He'd known about the scuba diving, they'd talked about it for years. But the chess? The baby? A pleasant warmth filled him.

He walked into the kitchen, a phone in his hand. “Hey, honey,” he said, his voice unusually animated. “How about we start planning that trip?”
