“No… no, that can’t be right,” Sarah mumbled to herself. The email, with its curt message, seemed to taunt her. She scrolled back through her drafts, the carefully chosen words, the meticulously crafted sentences. She had followed all the instructions, dotted every 'i' and crossed every 't'. How? Why?

A strange pressure built behind her eyes. Her vision blurred slightly. She gripped the edge of her desk, her knuckles turning white. The gentle breeze rustling the leaves outside her window felt suddenly mocking, as if even nature was indifferent to her setback.
