The email from Emily, inviting him to a networking event, sat unread in Daniel's inbox. He'd always known Emily as a vibrant and ambitious "Tech Entrepreneur," always talking about board meetings and venture capital. Now, thanks to a chance encounter at the supermarket, the picture was scrambled.

The supermarkets’ check-out line was long and slow, and he’d been surprised to see Emily scanning groceries, her face pale, the name tag on her uniform a jarring contrast to the designer clothes she was accustomed to wearing.

Daniel wanted answers. He wanted to understand why she had not been honest with him. He felt as if the world was suddenly spinning slightly out of control. He wanted to know how to respond to the email, and whether to go to the networking event at all.

He started to go through his emails, searching for a sign, a clue, anything.
