The phone vibrated in Chloe’s pocket, the reminder of the dinner date with David making her palms sweat. David, who was supposedly a famous concert pianist. She had been thrilled. He had regaled her with anecdotes of touring the world and collaborating with famous orchestras. But yesterday, she’d seen him playing in a dingy bar, the keys of the old piano clattering under his fingers.

She felt a wave of nausea. The music had been beautiful, haunting, but the image of David's face, etched with a quiet sadness, was seared into her memory. She didn't know how to feel. She picked up the phone to call him and cancel dinner. But her finger hovered over the dial button.

A deep breath. She needed to know what was going on. It all seemed so unreal.
