The aroma of freshly baked bread usually brought comfort to Daniel. Today, it was nauseating. He’d arrived home early from work and found Liam in the back garden, speaking in hushed tones into his phone. He'd quickly ended the call when Daniel walked over to him.

He pushed the bread around his plate, his appetite gone. Liam seemed to be keeping a secret. The change in Liam's behavior had been subtle at first, the occasional phone call in private, now becoming more frequent, more covert.

He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest. Was he imagining things? Was this just stress? He couldn't shake the sensation that something significant had shifted, a tectonic plate of their relationship had just moved.
