Sarah stared at the spreadsheet, her jaw tight. The numbers swam before her eyes. She’d been at the company for five years, diligently working her way up. Mark, fresh out of college, with barely a year under his belt, earned significantly more. A cold sensation crept up her spine, like icy water trickling down her back.

She reread the figures, then slammed her laptop shut. Her hands trembled slightly as she reached for her coffee mug, the ceramic cool against her skin. She had to ask, had to understand. The knot in her stomach tightened with each step she took towards the break room.
