"Well, this is unusual," John mumbled, examining the photograph that had slipped from a copy of *The Great Gatsby*. He had been expecting the thrill of a good novel, a bit of escapism. But now he felt nothing but a strange disorientation.

The photo, faded and slightly torn, showed a woman smiling, her face obscured by the shadow of a wide-brimmed hat. He couldn’t see her face, and his mind began to conjure images of who she might be. He felt a pressure in his chest, an unexplained sense of loss.

He turned the photo over, searching for a clue. There was a faint inscription, barely legible: "Remember." He didn't know who she was. He didn't know why she was there. But he knew, with a sudden certainty, that the book and the photo were somehow connected.
