From the doorway, David witnessed the scene unfold. A tiny kitten, batting at a dangling string, was the center of attention. Emily was on the floor, giggling, her face lit up. He felt a slow, cold dread settle in his chest.

He took a step back, the movement automatic, almost involuntary. They had discussed the possibility of getting a pet, yes, but only in the hypothetical. He’d imagined the discussions, the careful weighing of pros and cons. This was… different.

He closed his eyes briefly, then opened them, trying to make sense of the situation. The air felt strangely still. His head was swimming. Why hadn't she talked to him first? What had changed?
