The flickering fluorescent lights above offered little solace. Sarah tapped a fingernail against the cold metal wall, the sound echoing in the confined space. Why hadn't anyone noticed they were gone? Three hours. It felt like an eternity. She glanced at Mark, who was fiddling with his tie, a nervous habit she'd never witnessed before. His usual bluster was replaced with a tight-lipped silence.

She took a deep breath. "Do you think we should try the emergency phone again?" The static crackled on the small speaker. Nothing.

Her stomach churned. This was ridiculous. They'd been in the elevator for three hours. The building was supposed to be state-of-the-art. How could this happen? The air grew thick, and the scent of stale coffee and something metallic made her head swim.
