The crisp white paper trembled in Amelia's grasp. Eviction notice. Her name, bold and stark, stared back at her from the official document. She traced the cursive signature with a fingertip, a small, involuntary tremor running up her arm.

What could this mean? She'd paid rent on time, every month. Her brow furrowed, and a knot twisted in her stomach. She reread the first paragraph, then the second, the words blurring slightly. She felt suddenly, acutely, cold.

She walked to the window, the paper still clutched in her hand, and stared out at the bustling street below. A bus rumbled past, its doors hissing open and closed. It felt as if everything was moving forward, except her.
