Michael dropped the notice onto the kitchen table with a thud. The sound echoed in the otherwise silent apartment. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, leaving it standing on end.

He squinted at the document, the small print suddenly mocking him. He’d just finished decorating, spent his savings on new furniture. His heart gave a little lurch.

He sat heavily on a chair, feeling the sudden absence of air in the room. He felt the need to understand, to know the reasons. He grabbed the phone, fingers fumbling with the numbers.
