The letter arrived alongside the bills and junk mail, its thin paper a startling intrusion into Daniel's mundane routine. He scanned it quickly, a frown deepening on his face. The words, a clumsy attempt at contrition for a petty betrayal in college, felt like a foreign object lodged in his throat. He set the letter aside, a wave of internal discomfort washing over him.

He glanced around his apartment, at the familiar furniture and the carefully curated bookshelf. Everything was in its proper place, a testament to his orderly life. Yet, the letter felt like a discordant note, a misplaced piece of a puzzle he hadn't known he was trying to solve. He walked over to the kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, then found himself staring out the window, looking at nothing in particular.
