"Mom?" Mark's voice was tight, barely above a whisper. He held the letter out, his knuckles white. His mother reached for it cautiously, her own expression shifting from curiosity to bewilderment. The letter, an apology for a childhood prank that had led to a significant, and painful, incident, had arrived that morning.

He watched her read, his breath held captive in his chest. Her face, usually so open and expressive, seemed to shutter, her eyes widening slightly. A tremor ran through her, subtle but unmistakable. She looked up, meeting his gaze. A question hung unspoken between them. He wanted to help her, but felt as helpless as a child.

His own memories of the incident were fractured, but his mother remembered it all. Her silence was more eloquent than any words. He reached out and squeezed her hand, a gesture of silent comfort. Why now? The question was unspoken, but resonated in the stillness of the room.
