The new wallpaper in the hallway was supposed to be a fresh start. Emily had carefully chosen a delicate floral pattern, hoping to brighten up the space. The contractor, though, had seemed unusually hesitant during the installation, avoiding her gaze. Now she knew why.

While removing the old wallpaper, he'd found a small, handwritten note tucked behind a panel. The note spoke of a hidden key and a buried treasure. Emily was captivated. Following the directions in the note, she went to the basement. She found the key. After an hour of digging, she uncovered a small wooden box.

Inside the box were jewels and cash. But there were also several police reports. Emily scanned the reports. The reports, detailed and disturbing, related to a robbery and a murder that had occurred in her home many years ago. She closed the box slowly, the weight of the past settling on her shoulders. Her face flushed, and she felt a tightness in her chest.
