Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside Thomas. He'd stumbled upon the account while balancing their checkbook, a task usually handled by his wife, Sarah. The numbers jumped out at him, a foreign language he couldn't quite decipher, yet understood completely. He sank into his chair, the chair suddenly feeling too small.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was doing. He thought about their vacations, the slightly run-down car, the constant budgeting. Why? What was the purpose of all this? He needed a walk, needed to clear his head, he decided.

He grabbed his coat, the weight of the information pressing down on him. As he opened the front door, he heard Sarah humming in the kitchen, preparing dinner. He hesitated, then slammed the door. The sound echoed in the sudden silence.
