He saw the new security system being installed on his neighbour's house, the one with the high walls and the electric gate. He’d always known Mrs. Hawthorne as a bit of a loner. She kept to herself and drove a battered old car.

He rubbed his chin, recalling their shared conversations about the rising cost of utilities. He saw the workers placing cameras everywhere. He suddenly felt a sense of… imbalance, a tremor in his understanding of the world.

He went inside. He couldn't quite bring himself to meet her gaze, to inquire about the changes. He found himself avoiding eye contact, and he began to feel a need to take a long walk.
