Gemotions

The flickering fluorescent lights of the clinic seemed to mock Amelia’s unease. She kept tapping her fingers against the cold plastic armrest, a nervous rhythm accompanying the rapid beating of her heart. Across from her, a middle-aged man with kind eyes was looking at her, a strange mix of concern and something else she couldn’t quite place etched on his face.

“The chances of this are, well, astronomically low,” the doctor had stated earlier. Amelia still couldn’t wrap her head around it. The blood tests, the scans – all pointing to the same absurd conclusion. They both had Fibrous Dysplasia, affecting only a handful of people worldwide.

“So, you’re… what, confused too?” the man finally asked, his voice hesitant. Amelia met his gaze, and a shared feeling of disbelief washed over them both. “Yeah,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I have no idea what any of this *means*."
