A tightening sensation gripped Leo’s chest, making it hard to breathe. He’d reread the email from the specialist three times, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a formal invitation to a conference, a gathering of people with… the same thing. He looked over to the window, the city sprawling below, indifferent to his internal turmoil.

A knot formed in his stomach. The rare disease, which they both shared, had always been a solitary companion. Now, suddenly, there were others. And this gathering… He instinctively reached for his phone, a desire to communicate, to understand, pushing aside his reservations. A sense of unease settled into him.

He debated whether or not he should go. The possibility of meeting others like himself was intriguing. But also… terrifying.
