Gemotions

“This is insane," Maya muttered, staring at the small, metal canister. She found it whilst cleaning out her childhood bedroom. It was buried in the dirt under the window, hidden beneath a layer of old toys and forgotten trinkets.

She didn't remember doing this. She sat on the bed, feeling a knot of confusion forming in her stomach. The canister was sealed tightly with what looked like superglue. She grabbed a hammer and chisel from her father's toolbox, then hesitated. Her hands trembled slightly as she took aim.

After a few forceful blows, she managed to pry the lid open. Inside, crammed together, were a handful of things: a dried flower, a worn-out comic book, a photograph of her and her best friend. The best friend who moved away years ago. The photograph felt oddly heavy in her hands.
