Liam found the crumpled piece of paper tucked inside the sock drawer. It was his girlfriend, Chloe's, handwriting. He recognized it immediately. He unfolded it carefully, his fingers brushing against the faded ink. The words, simple yet strange, swam before his eyes: "Ride a hot air balloon," "Learn Italian," "Meet a famous chef."

He leaned back against the closed bedroom door, the air seeming to thicken around him. He'd always thought Chloe was content. They'd built a life together, a comfortable, predictable routine.
