The email was short and to the point. "Your essay, 'The Kaleidoscope of Life,' has been selected for a prestigious anthology." Anna felt a strange disconnect, like she was observing the email from outside her body.

She slowly began to tap her fingers on her desk, the rhythmic sound filling the otherwise silent room. She re-read the email, each word causing a new wave of disquiet to wash over her. It was a strange, unsettling sensation.

She got up and walked around her apartment, her steps echoing on the wooden floor. She felt the urge to do something, anything, to break the spell. She grabbed her keys and left.
