The news hit Michael like a blast of cold air. He sat frozen, the rejection email still open on his phone. The vibrant colors of the campus coffee shop seemed to blur around him. The barista called out the next order, but Michael didn't register it.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. He stood up abruptly, knocking over his half-empty coffee cup, the dark liquid spilling across the table. He mumbled an apology, but then turned and hurried away, not bothering to clean up the mess.
