"No," Clara whispered, the word barely audible. She reread the rejection letter, the carefully chosen language doing nothing to soften the blow. Her carefully curated vision of university life, a future she’d painstakingly planned, dissolved into a confusing mess.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. Tears welled up, blurring the already blurred vision of her room. She sank down onto her bed, burying her face in the pillow.

She wanted to scream, to pound her fists against something, anything. Instead, she just lay there, the weight of the rejection a tangible presence.
