David felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He’d poured his heart and soul into the application, staying up nights, revising and perfecting every detail. Now, the response was a simple, curt, "denied." He felt like someone had just stolen the air from his lungs.

He slammed his laptop shut, the metallic click echoing in the otherwise silent library. He stood up so fast his chair tipped over. He ignored the stares of the other students as he began to pace, feeling the need to explode.

He felt a surge of hot, angry energy course through him. He fought to contain it, clenching his fists and biting down on his lip until it almost bled. He had to be calm. He could fix this.
