The phone call had been short, the voice on the other end, curt and impersonal. "Ms. Evans is no longer with the firm." No explanation, no further details. Just a simple sentence. Maria’s hand started to shake, and she dropped the phone. It clattered to the floor. She knelt down, retrieving it, her fingers fumbling with the buttons.

She felt a tremor in her jaw, her teeth suddenly clenched. She stood up and walked to the window. The city outside, usually a source of inspiration, now looked hostile, overwhelming. The bright lights blurred through her watery eyes. She felt a pressure building behind them.
