It was the quietest night in weeks and the silence of the beach was a sharp contrast to the roar in David’s head. He had just seen Sam, his friend who claimed to be a small business owner, on a yacht that could house a small town, laughing and toasting with people he didn’t recognize.

David sat on a damp log, tracing patterns in the sand with a twig. He felt numb. He couldn't feel the cool night air. The salty wind offered no relief. Everything felt out of focus, blurred, as though he was looking through a dirty pane of glass.
