“So, you’re the new project manager?” The voice boomed from across the enormous conference table. The speaker, a man with a booming laugh, regarded her with a scrutinizing gaze. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

The presentation slides were a blur of graphs and charts, all utterly baffling. She found herself stumbling over the technical terms, her voice cracking with the strain. Her colleagues, all seasoned professionals, watched her with thinly veiled amusement.

She excused herself to visit the restroom, and leaned against the sink, staring into the mirror. Her face was pale, her eyes wide and panicked. The woman she saw reflected back at her was a stranger.
