The confetti cannons lay on the kitchen counter, unused. Emily felt her body go rigid as she reread the text message. *Party off.* The simple, devastating words echoed in her mind. Her carefully constructed facade of composure crumbled. She slammed her fist on the counter, the force startling her. She began to pace the floor, her steps rapid and erratic. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps. She felt a need to break something, to shatter the emptiness that had suddenly enveloped her.
