The realtor had described the house as “charming,” a word that now grated on Sarah’s nerves. The afternoon sun, filtering through the dust-covered windows, created an eerie play of light and shadow in the hall. She’d spent the day trying to organize the kitchen, and the stress was starting to wear on her.

She'd been exploring the upstairs when she stumbled upon it. A door, flush against the wall, disguised so well she’d almost missed it. Now, she felt a prickling sensation on the back of her neck as she turned the brass knob. It opened with a soft sigh, as if exhaling centuries of secrets.

Inside was a small room, filled with stacks of old books and faded photographs. Sarah felt a sudden chill, despite the warm air of the house. She wasn't sure what she expected, but the sight of a child’s rocking horse, still in place, set something off inside her. She wanted to run, but her feet were glued to the floor.
