The movers were gone, and David was alone. He’d envisioned a peaceful evening, unpacking, settling in, maybe even starting to organize his office. The new house, a sleek modern design, was everything he'd wanted. Now, the silence felt suffocating.

He found the room quite by accident. He was chasing after a runaway cat that belonged to the previous owners, and stumbled onto a false wall in the basement. The cat, oblivious, darted through the opening, disappearing into the darkness. David followed, his heart rate spiking.

The room was damp and cold, lit only by a single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. A workbench covered in tools sat in the center, and the air held the metallic scent of old machinery. He stared at the room, his breath catching in his throat.
