He tried to whistle, just to break the quiet, but no sound would come. Mark, standing in the cavernous hallway of the new home, felt the weight of his loneliness settling over him. He knew very little about the house’s history, and the previous owner had been strangely evasive.

The discovery was a total shock. While inspecting the attic, he’d stumbled over a loose floorboard. After removing it, he found a narrow staircase leading down. He descended the stairs, each step amplifying the pounding of his heart.

He found himself in a small, windowless room, the air thick with the smell of mildew. A single, dusty armchair sat in the center, facing a blank wall. He reached out to touch the chair, then recoiled his hand, as if burned. He wanted to go. He needed to leave.
