He paced. Back and forth, across the worn linoleum of the kitchen floor. He stopped and stared at the chipped paint on the window frame, a nervous tic making his eyelid twitch. The house was too quiet, the silence pressing in on him, a stifling weight. His sister, Sarah, was humming a cheerful tune in the garden, seemingly unaffected by the task ahead. "Can you believe it?" he muttered, rubbing his hands together. He felt the phantom itch on his skin, a constant, irritating sensation he couldn’t seem to scratch away.
