"Did you... did you read my diary?"

Sarah's voice was barely a whisper. She stared at Emily, her roommate, who was sprawled on the bed, phone in hand. The usually bright room seemed to dim. A buzzing in her ears escalated, and she felt a tremor pass through her.

Emily didn't meet her eyes. She mumbled something about "finding it on the floor," but the evasion in her tone was palpable. Sarah’s carefully constructed sense of self, which she had so carefully guarded in the pages of her journal, now felt fragile, exposed. She crossed her arms, a shield against the sudden vulnerability.

"I just... I can't believe it," she said, her voice cracking. She turned and fled, the door slamming shut behind her.
