He stared at the document, the bold, black print a cruel mockery. Alex felt a surge of heat flood his face. His carefully constructed plans, the years of hard work, seemed to unravel before his eyes.

He stood, abruptly knocking his chair backward. It clattered against the floor. He ignored it, pacing the small, cluttered room. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. He ran his hand through his hair, tugging at the strands.

He needed to think. Needed to understand. He started to draft an email, then deleted it. Another. Then another. He felt like his thoughts were scrambling around like panicked mice. He slumped back on the bed, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on him.
