The old desk creaked ominously as it opened. Amelia found a stack of letters hidden away at the back. Her fingers trembled as she pulled out the one that caught her eye. It was addressed to her college professor, the one who had seen her potential and then vanished from her life. She remembered the crush, the embarrassment, the silence that followed. She could still feel the burn of her own youthful disappointment. Her stomach felt empty, but she felt a strange pressure in her chest. She pushed the letter away. It was too much.
