Gemotions

The coffee cup trembled in Amelia's grip, sloshing lukewarm liquid over the rim and onto her already-stained blouse. She hadn't slept well, tossing and turning with the promotion announcement looming over her. The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a mocking tune, a constant reminder of the competition. Her eyes darted from the window, seeking a moment of peace in the bustling city outside, but even the familiar skyline appeared distorted, the buildings towering like judgmental giants.

A curt cough from behind made her jump. It was Mark, her rival. He was already in his power suit, looking polished and confident. Amelia forced a smile, the muscles in her face feeling tight and unfamiliar.

"Morning, Mark," she managed, her voice cracking slightly.

He nodded, his gaze sweeping over her briefly. "Busy day ahead, wouldn't you say?" His tone was affable, but there was a glint in his eye that she couldn't quite decipher. She wanted to scream, to smash something, but instead, she just swallowed hard and went back to staring at the spilling coffee.
