"Boston?" Amelia echoed, the word sounding alien and distant. She stared at David, whose smile felt forced, his eyes avoiding hers. A chill spread through her, even though the sun beat down on the patio. She felt her hands growing cold.

She pushed her plate away, her appetite suddenly gone. She’d been so focused on planning their annual summer hike, their weekend getaway in the mountains. This news had shattered that vision, turning it into useless shards of memory.

She excused herself and went to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face. The reflection in the mirror seemed unfamiliar, her eyes wide, frightened. She looked away, turning from the mirror as if she’d seen a ghost.
