The clatter of dishes in the sink suddenly grated on Olivia's nerves. She rounded on Jake, words catching in her throat, a jumble of anger and confusion. His announcement had left her reeling, the carefully constructed plans for their future dissolving before her eyes.

She stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door behind her. She threw herself onto the bed, burying her face in the pillows. The familiar scent of their shared space, usually a comfort, now felt like a taunt.

She felt a hot stinging sensation behind her eyes. The idea of waking up every day without him, without their easy camaraderie, seemed unbearable. She choked back a sob. She wanted him to take it back.
