The afternoon sun streamed through the windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but all Jane could see was darkness. They had found the victim in the very guest room she'd been planning to convert into a home office.

She ran a hand along the smooth surface of the desk, the wood suddenly feeling cold and alien. Her breath came in shallow, shaky gasps. She couldn't shake the images from her mind, the details the detective had shared.

She slammed the laptop shut, the sound echoing in the stillness. She felt a burning need to cleanse, to scrub away the past, to somehow purify the air. She needed to do something. Anything.
