“Next!” The receptionist’s voice sliced through the thin veil of composure James had been struggling to maintain. He jumped, his heart leaping into his throat. He’d been trying to prepare himself, to envision the conversation, to remember all the things he wanted to say. But now, all he felt was a disquiet he couldn't shake. The air seemed thin, the fluorescent lights overhead were too bright, and he felt acutely exposed.
