"Just put them there," John snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the table in the entryway. The delivery guy, a young man with tired eyes, quickly complied and departed. John watched him go, then slammed the door. He was suddenly aware of the pounding in his chest.

He stalked towards the arrangement, his steps heavy and uncertain. It was a lavish display, expensive and…wrong. He knew who it was from, and he did not want to see it. He ran through recent events in his mind, grasping for solid ground.

He spun around and grabbed his phone, his thumb hovering over the number he had sworn he'd block weeks ago. He didn’t press it. He swallowed hard, then slowly, deliberately, picked up the phone and hurled it across the room.
